August. It’s that time of the year when we try to squeeze in as much summer fun as possible before the season changes. It’s that transition period before school begins and fall rolls in. The perfect gem to commemorate this month is Peridot. Not only is it the birthstone of the month, but it’s also a precious stone that perfectly fits the themes of summer and fall.

For all the August babies and curious folks, here are some fun facts you may not know about August’s birthstone:

Magical powers: Peridot is said to host magical powers and healing properties to protect against nightmares and to bring the wearer power, influence, and a wonderful year.

Historical importance: Peridot is among the oldest known gemstones. Ancient Egyptians, around 1580 B.C. to 1350 B.C., created beads from peridot. For Greeks and Romans, peridot was in popular use as intaglios, rings, inlays, and pendants.

Happy 16th Anniversary: Peridot is said to be an ideal gift for couples celebrating their 16th anniversary.

Evening Emerald: The Romans called Peridot “evening emerald,” since its green color did not darken at night but was still visible through a lamplight.
